Remote photography became an unexpected artistic tool during the COVID-19 pandemic. At a time when lockdowns and strict contact restrictions made personal encounters almost impossible, this method offered new ways of staying connected. Instead of using her own camera, Oxana Guryanova relied on the smartphones of her protagonists, which she controlled with the help of the Shutter App directly from her home in Cologne.
Through this approach, she portrayed women from the USA, across Europe, and Russia, entering their everyday spaces virtually. In long conversations, they spoke about the sudden return to traditional gender roles, the burden of household responsibilities, and the challenges of homeschooling. Feelings of exhaustion, confinement, and fear shaped this period.
This photographic project focuses on these women in their intimate surroundings. The images show moments of vulnerability, strength, and reflection, offering an insight into the personal realities of mothers during the pandemic. The series was published in L.Fritz Magazine, Issue #8, 2022.
